Noticing the Signs of Sexual Abuse

Sexual abuse is one of the most devastating things that could ever happen to a person. Unfortunately, the victims are often children. According to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System supplied by the Department of Health and Human Services, 9.3 percent of child abuse or neglect cases involve sexual abuse. In one year, up to 83,000 children are sexually abused. It is important to understand that children have a voice, and that voice should be heard. Parents, family members and friends should all be aware of the signs of sexual abuse. The more people aware of this reality, the better the chances are of stopping it.

There are two basic ways of discovering child sexual abuse. The first is by way of direct disclosure. If a child approaches a parent and explains what is going on, then the issue can be brought to light and the perpetrator held responsible for his or her actions. The other way is more common, and that is the indirect method. For example, this may involve a parent noticing odd behavior or even physical signs of sexual abuse. Knowing this, what are some common sexual abuse indicators?

Young children, those under the age of ten, may begin to lose sleep, have trouble eating, display signs of guilt, fear or withdrawal. Any abnormal behavior should be examined. Look for patterns such as when these behaviors are occurring and how long they persist. Older children and adolescents will typically display different signs of abuse, such as depression, poor performance in school, drug abuse, eating disorders and even suicidal tendencies. Talk to your child about these behaviors. If you believe that sexual abuse is going on, please do not hesitate to involve a Texas sexual abuse lawyer from our firm.
