Sexual Bullying

Bullying has recently become a social focal point in the United States. Although many forms of bullying have existed for years, recent studies about the psychological repercussions to victims have demonstrated that bullying is not nearly as innocuous as it may seem. In addition, 21st century life has introduced new forms of bullying, including cyberstalking, and Facebook abuse. When these acts take on a sexual nature, the effects and impact on victims are significantly intensified.

What is sexual bullying?

Any type of verbal, emotional, or physical abuse or harassment can be considered bullying. Sexual bullying is defined more precisely as any bullying behavior that is based on a person's sexuality or gender. In this type of bullying, sexuality and gender are used as a weapon, and the harassment can be carried out in person, without a victim's knowledge, or through the use of technology.

Statistics have revealed that sexual bullying is most prevalent among youth and teens, specifically as a form of abuse in schools. Unlike sexual harassment, sexual bullying may not be technically illegal. This does not mean that the effects are any less damaging, as young children and teens can experience a great deal of torment, emotional distress, and numerous social and personal consequences as a result of sexual bullying and the extreme lengths it can be taken to before it ends or is stopped.

The most difficult aspect regarding sexual bullying is that it is so overwhelmingly pervasive, as sexually emergent youth often fail to understand the fine line separating name calling and bullying from outright sexual abuse. As the consequences are extremely real and potentially devastating, it becomes vital that sexual bullying never be tolerated.
